Where Did 420 Day Get Its Name?
‘420 Day’ got its name way back in 1971 when a group of high school student were trying to search for an abandoned cannabis crop from a map left by the grower. They decided to meet outside San Rafael High School precisely at 4:20pm on the day scheduled to start their search. After few failed attempts of finding the legendary crop, the group coined the term “420” as a code word used to describe when they were going to use cannabis. This later became mainstream in 1991 when Steven Hager from High Times wrote about ‘420’ being a police code term. It wasn’t until the mid '90s that 420 became popularized by cannabis enthusiasts as an official day where people would smoke weed and dedicate an entire day to their favorite plant. It was cleverly decided that the most suitable date to celebrate 420 on was the 20th of April because when read backwards the date reads ‘4/20’.
